Euro 2025

Whenever the league season ends for the summer break it can feel like an agonising wait for the start of the next season, but the football thankfully never stops. This summer saw the Women’s Euros, hosted in Switzerland all throughout July, with home nations England and Wales taking part. Several Proud Baggies members travelled to see England and other nations play, and closer to home Proud Baggies hosted some football socials at Nightingales and The Fox in the Village to watch along together.

PB couple Kasia and Marika went over for the entirety of the knockout phase of the tournament, which concluded with England’s Lionesses winning the tournament. The worst half of our media team asked the better half of these two about their experience following the England team and exploring Switzerland.

Liam: Kasia, hello! We’re a few months on from England’s incredible triumph in Switzerland, so now we’ve all had time to calm down - how much did you enjoy the Euros as an experience?
Kasia: We loved every minute of it! The games were great and the fans were amazing too — everyone was super respectful. It was also cool to see that most of the crowd were women. It just shows how much women’s football is growing!

What would you say were the best bits of your trip?
Well, England winning the Euro has to be there! But experiencing it in such lovely surroundings was just another level. It was definitely the experience of a lifetime.

And the worst bits? Switzerland’s a lovely country and a popular tourist destination, but was there anything that surprised you about your time there?
Money, money, money. I wish we could have spent some more time exploring the country. Unfortunately, public transport is quite expensive. For example, a return train ticket to one of the hiking spots would cost over £200 for one person!

How was Switzerland as a host nation? Were the facilities good? You mentioned that the crowds were majority women but was the attendance good overall? What about the publicity or promotion of the games?
Wherever you went, there was something related to the Euros. So many Swiss companies had advertisements with Swiss players. Obviously, every host city had a flags, banner and decorations hung everywhere; they really wanted to show off their cities to tourists.

Fanzones were open every day, not only on matchdays, which was great. I believe each knockout stage game was sold out, and even group stage games were pretty good. The only thing I could complain about is sometimes there were signs with directions or instructions about the Euros, in fanzones for example, but without any English translation, which I found a bit odd.

And what about Switzerland been as a tourist destination? A pleasant green land known for its rolling hills and prominent mountains…
It’s an awesome country! Actually, it being the host was one of the reasons I wanted to go to these Euros, as I thought it’s probably once in a lifetime opportunity, but now I want to come back there! It’s beautiful, clean, and quiet; you really feel that time is going slower over there. Everyone should go there at least once, because you can’t really explain its beauty. And swimming down the River Aare was just something I’ll never forget!

How does the Women’s Euros compare to other football games or tournaments you’ve been to? Regardless of gender
The atmosphere was just amazing; everyone in the stands had fun. You could sit next to someone supporting another team and there were no issues with celebrating or anything. A great example was that last-minute Katrine Ann Berger save against France. I think there was not a single person who didn’t applaud that. Of course, people want their team to win, but everyone just wants to appreciate good football.

What made you want to spend and go see this year’s event? Love of the game, expectation of England to do well, specific players?
Three years ago, I was able to see a few games here in England. I fell in love with women’s football at that time and whenever there is an opportunity to watch some, I don’t want to miss it!

Would you recommend doing such an extended experience at a competition like you and Marika did for the knockout phase, or would you do a shorter 1-2 games stay in future?
Well… I’m hoping for the next Euro to be in Poland so we can spend the whole month back home! But I guess it all depends on where it is, because you do need to plan your expenses in advance. Even though I would love to spend more time in Switzerland, it wouldn’t probably be good for my bank account.

Will you be both be going to the Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027?
We don’t plan on it just yet. If we do decide to do it, then we will probably just stay in one host city and attend a game or two. But it’s still a big maybe. I wouldn’t feel safe travelling around the country, to be honest.
