WBA Women Help Make Sport Everyone's Game
On Sunday 25th November, Proud Baggies met West Bromwich Albion Women as part of the Stonewall Rainbow Laces campaign at their game versus Bedworth United.
Whilst men’s football is still in single digits regards openly queer players, women’s football has far more ‘out’ players - and the same goes for its fanbase. That’s a great thing, that people can feel so comfortable to be their true selves, but it does also invite prejudice, hostility and even abuse from some in society.
We appreciate all the support given by the Albion Women taking part in the Rainbow Laces campaign, and we hope that by working together we can advocate for all LGBTQ+ football fans and professionals to make a safer, more inclusive environment.
In the game, an injury time header from Hannah Baines - assisted from the corner spot by captain Hannah George - saw us take all three points in a closely contested match with third-place Bedworth. The result extends Albion’s lead at the top of the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands table to six points, with Louis Sowe’s side having won nine games from nine in the league so far this season.
