The famous Man Utd...
Reigning FA Cup champions Manchester United Women hosted the Albion at Leigh Sports Village in the fourth round of the Women's FA Cup.
The Baggies beat Knowle, Worcester City, then Cheadle Town Stingers in 2-0 the last round to earn this momentous cup tie, and so it was that West Brom fans made their way up the M6 and into Lancashire for this evening’s cup game.
The home side, WSL contenders, ran out 7-0 winners in the end, but the Baggies fought hard all game and had vociferous vocal support from the Proud Baggies to encourage them - holding out at just 1-0 down to Melvine Malard’s 23rd minute goal until the 77th minute when Celin Bizet doubled United’s lead and opened the floodgates against a tired Albion.
Further goals came from former Blues player Rachel Williams, a returning Ella Toone (following injury and the sad passing of her father), and then a quickfire flurry from Bizet, Williams, and Bizet again - the Norwegian winger securing her hat-trick and rounding out the victory.
Defeat is always disappointing, but the team can be proud of their efforts on the field and hopefully enjoyed this momentous occasion playing one of England’s top teams in what was a great advert for the women’s game.
